LONDONDERRY, N.H. -- A Londonderry girl is on the long road to recovery after a rare disease resulted in a quadruple amputation.

bellaBella Tucker, 8, was diagnosed with streptococcus pneumonia sepsis with DIC on the day after Easter. Doctors had to remove part of her arms and legs, and on Friday, she underwent her final procedure.

"I think the spirit of a child is very strong, much stronger than an adult," said family friend Tammy Kozlowski. "I think they're more resilient, and I think her spirit was strong to begin with, and I think she's going to do something pretty amazing in her life."

Kozlowski runs a website to raise money for the family through the Bella Tucker Fund and keep people informed of Bella's progress.

One source of strength for the third-grader has been her classmates at Londonderry's South Elementary School.

"They just want Bella back," said her teacher, Laurie Daily. "They know she hasn't changed. The inside, her heart and soul, is still Bella, and they can't wait to go into fourth grade and see her next year."

At school, students are told about Bella's situation if they ask. Daily said most just want to know when they can see her again, and they send her a bag of letters every week.

"Their message is pretty much the same each time," Daily said. "How much they miss her and love her and can't wait to see her in the fourth grade."

The school has raised about $22,000 to help Bella's family.

Kozlowski said that on Wednesday, Bella is scheduled to move from Children's Hospital in Boston to the Spaulding Rehabilitation Center for four to six weeks, and then to Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia for another four to six months.

The South School is holding a walk-a-thon on Friday to help the Tucker family. Information can be found on the family's website, and donations can be sent to:
